Abstract

The improvement of the travel time of (private) cars, e.g. by green waves in coordinated traffic signals, decreases the fuel consumption. Objections against this kind of measures rely on the believe that an improvement in traffic flow always is detrimental to other transport modes and stimulates the use of private cars.
