Abstract

In the project Verkeersgetuigen, 17 and 18 year-olds in secondary schools are exposed to the testimony of a road victim with permanent damage. This victim reports in the classroom about the accident and the impact from it on his/her life. Afterwards, the youngsters get the opportunity to ask questions or begin a conversation with the victim. In the international literature, we found some projects of the same kind. In the Netherlands, the method is used in the project Traffic Informers. This project is often combined with other educational projects. Sometimes, the testimonies of road victims are part of road shows. These shows catch the youngsters’ attention with loud music and confronting movies. In de United States, road victims are put in Victim Impact Panels. These are also testimonies about the impact of road accidents on victims and relatives. But the primary target group of these panels was the group of drivers convicted for driving under the influence of alcohol. Only at a later stage they were also set up for educational purposes with youngsters. In the United Kingdom, youngsters are approached with theatre performances to point to the consequences of risky behaviour in traffic. Less direct testimonies of victims are found in Sweden and Australia, where they are part of TV films or DVD’s.
