Abstract

As part of the ASTRID (Algorithms and Systems for the Benefit of Travel Time Information on DRIPs (Dynamic Route Information Panels)) project the effects of various information types on traffic flow at the Rotterdam beltway are assessed. The dynamic DYNDART assignment model version 1.0 is used in order to simulate the traffic process on this beltway realistically, including the effect of information provision and the dynamic processes involved. The following conclusions are made: (1) Information provision to a limited group of road users can have a significant positive contribution to the traffic performance; (2) The provision of queue length information on DRIPs at the northern part of Rotterdam achieves the largest positive contribution, directly followed by travel time. Delay time information shows the least positive results; (3) In particular under non-recurrent congestion the provision of travel time information proves to be considerably beneficial; and (4) the provision of information over a part of the beltway (without the A15 in the South) shows better results than providing information over the entire beltway. Based on the conclusions it is advised that a pilot providing travel time information on DRIPs near Rotterdam be implemented. See also C 4789, C 7428, C 7429 and C 7431.
