Abstract

Traffic control systems have grown greatly not only in number but also in diversity. A forest of traffic signals has sprang up through which the roaduser has to find his or her way. While not wishing to disparage modern technical advances it is time to do some pruning an thinning out in the forest of traffic signals. The purpose of the paper is to stimulate a debate on how this can best be done.
