Abstract

An inquiry was held into all methods of traffic education and also into traffic material used in schools. The inquiry was held on teachers in the primary schools. The effectiveness of traffic education as it is given at present in primary schools and kindergarten is considered as low. From the evidence of the teachers and from international studies and experiments an improvement can be expected regarding safe traffic behaviour of children by means of (1) more training on the street in real traffic situations; (2) greater concern on the part of the parents in traffic education and (3) traffic education being aimed at specific traffic situations in the neighbourhood of the school or in the neighbourhood of the dwellings of the schoolchildren. Traffic education must also be given in schools after the primary school.
