Abstract

The paper discusses the first phase of the IJmond traffic study. The purpose of this study is to determine the future demand for transport and traffic facilities, to be used as a basis for an overall transport and traffic plan for the area. Physical planning had long preceded this study and the results were used as the socio-economic geographical model underlying the transport and traffic study. For forecasting transport-demand and traffic volumes in the planning period around 1958 a "curstone" interview survey was made of public transport and all wheeled traffic in May 1966. The resulting "ideal" car traffic flow diagrams are discussed, showing the influence of two solutions for the required additional Noordzeekanaal tunnel crossing.
