Abstract

This report is intended to offer support during the different stages necessary to implement a traffic safety policy. The report gives an overview of traffic risks in the Netherlands in a great number of tables. The preliminary chapters describe the background of the data and the sources. They show how the figures can be used in the development and implementation of traffic safety policy. The chapters discuss how one can decide which risk measure in a particular situation should be used. In most cases, risk is expressed as the number of casualties per passenger kilometer. On this basis, a distinction is mostly made between the seriousness of the casualty, with separate tables for the total number of casualties, the number of hospitalized and killed victims. The risks are differentiated with respect to, among other things: (1) road type; (2) junction type; (3) the interaction between transport mode and age of the victim; and (4) region. For part 2 of the study see C 2527.
