Abstract

An investigation is made to improve the operation and the capacity of the German inland waterway system, without increasing fleet tonnage. A mathematical-statistical analysis has been made of the characteristics of water transport on the different types of waterways. A method is given to calculate the average waiting time. A simulation model for the operation of a sluice is made under application of the queuing theory. Some methods to maintain the predetermined ship's speed are discussed.
