The present document is part of the scientific investigation accompanying the implementation of the road safety program in the State of Brandenburg. It is intended to show the significance of road safety in the execution of highway construction projects. For this purpose, all municipal and highway construction offices of the State were questioned. For the purpose of covering the individual measures, a standardised questionnaire was used, which was divided according to types of measures. The results document what has been achieved so far as well as the type and scope of further action required. From 1992 to 1994, the main emphasis was placed on the renewal of carriageways and on the redesigning of junctions. The accompanying alignment optimisation was restricted to only a few construction projects. The improvement of road safety in avenues, in which accidents often have severe consequences, concentrated on the fitting of guard rails. Because of the special problems involved, guard rails have so far been fitted in only a few avenues. Because of the restrictions on public spending, a thorough renewal of the supra-regional road network will not take place in the next few years. Future highway construction, projects will therefore have to concentrate on severe safety hazards and regions in which the accident rates are particularly high. (Author/publisher)
