Abstract
A study has been made into the relationship between the number of accidents (in darkness) and the level of luminance of the lighting along highways outside built-up areas. Quality specifications are translated in terms of luminance and uniformity of the lighting. Accident data are analyzed using log-linear analysis, a TOBIT analysis and a Poisson analysis. The appendix contains several data of highways outside built-up areas including a number of pictures of photographs.
