Abstract

An inquiry was conducted into the traffic safety in the neighbourhood of primary schools in the Netherlands during May and June 1972. The results show a.o. that 6% of the schools have an unsafe environment; pupils have to cross busy roads or dangerous junctions in order to reach the school; in half of these cases no safety measures have been taken to assist children when crossing the road; half of all accidents with schoolchildren occur on the road to or from school. Some recommendations for safety measures are given.
