The Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management published in its 'Vision on Urbanisation and Mobility' how land use planning for the 2005-2015 period could deal with its goals on mobility, accessibility, and environment. This study searches for additional information for the evaluation of urbanisation options from the road safety point of view. Based on empirical figures, the safety for internal traffic in old and new urban areas was compared. The results were used for the comparison of inner-urban locations with new settlements. In addition, the road safety effects of different urbanisation strategies were evaluated. The results help to judge urbanisation options on road safety. However, the specific situation has to be taken into account, when evaluating individual locations. (A)
