Abstract

The need for new houses in the western part of The Netherlands is considerable: 550,000 in the period between 2010 and 2030. Different urbanisation concepts were explored using a land-use model, within the scope of the forthcoming national masterplans: the fifth Note on Spatial Planning and the National Traffic and Transport Plan (NVVP). Also, the influence of infrastructure is a part of this study. Because the study is not finished yet, the conclusions are based on the results till now. urbanisation in the central part of the Randstad increases the urbanisation and congestion in the green centre of the Randstad. The `wing' concept saves the green part and spreads out the increased congestion over a larger area. Improving regional public transport causes concentration, while adding a fast public transport network between the important junctions in the Randstad causes spreading again. The fast network of public transport does, in these urbanisation concepts, not have an influence on the congestion, but the number and travel distance by public transport will increase. (A)
