Abstract

Fading borders : mobility as indicator for a changing spatial balance. Ever since the borders between the European countries have faded, the number of Dutch families that has moved to Germany and Belgium has grown significantly, which leads to a restoration of the spatial balance. The activity patterns of the resettled people remain the same, which leads to an increase of mobility in the borderline area between Germany and Holland. To be able to anticipate on the effects of this increasing mobility, a high level of effectiveness of mobility policy has to be achieved. An integral approach is needed. The effectiveness of the policy follows from the way people move. To monitor this, a mobility flow inquiry was initiated in the region Twente in the east of the Netherlands. By learning from the current effectiveness of mobility measures, the mobility policy can be improved. This way, anticipating on the effects of increasing mobility in borderline areas is possible.
