Abstract

A short running research project on the substitutability of car use by other modes has recently been completed. The research focusses on the segmentation of car use in respect of alternative mode choice being perceived to be possible in principal. This recent view might give the Dutch Ministry of Transport a starting step to develop a masterplan for promotion of selective car use. It emerged that substitutability of car use is rather high. People do not exclude an alternative choice or do not heavily object for 60% percent of their car trips. So, the intended policy to discourage car use has broad perspectives.
