Abstract

Which transport company takes the weather forecast into account when determining how transport is offered ? In public transport the offer of too much transport capacity is considered as inevitable. But is that true ? The possibilities for improving efficiency by modifying transport provision to demand are hardly explored. Discussions frequently degenerate into principal ideas about the minimum level of transport provisions. In the city of Groningen another way was choosen to improve the quality of public transport. This was done by a logical and systematic provision of public transport which can be easily understood by the passenger, and which gives at the same time enough margin to vary the capacity according to the time of the year as well as to daily circumstances. A basic service with steady patternson all transport lines offers an integral and a well connected public transport system. An Automatized supporting system (GEOS 2000) will help to increase the public transport product.
