Abstract

VIAVIEW is a user-friendly computerized pavement management system (PMS) enabling decisions to be made for pavement maintenance planning on a road network level. VIAVIEW is based on a visual inspection system for the road network, developed by the Dutch Study Centre for Road Construction. This system has been accepted as the national standard in The Netherlands. It consists of two parts, an inventory and an inspection. The inventory is a detailed description of the type, amount, age and location of the pavements considered. The inspection is a description of the pavement quality at a certain point in time, using objective standard procedures. The development of pavement quality in time is predicted using standard degradation models. Using these input data, VIAVIEW automatically calculates the overall maintenance needs. Proposals for maintenance treatments are made, choosing those treatments which have highest effect-costs ratio. (A) The German title of this article is: VIAVIEW : das Pavement Management System.
