Abstract

The article describes the range of Traficon video-based technologies for traffic analysis, more than 1000 of whose sensors are now used world-wide. Traficon has developed its systems in collaboration with Belgian research centres and universities, with the support of the Flemish Government. The large-scale integration of its detectors in centralised traffic control systems has led to an increasing number of successful installations in Belgium and other countries. Traficon technologies include: (1) Camera and Computer Aided Traffic Sensor (CCATS); (2) Camera and Computer Aided Incident Detection Sensor (CCIDS); (3) Video Image Compression (VIC); (4) Camera Vehicle Tracking Sensor (CTRACK); and (5) Video Image Processor Hardware. The main applications of Traficon sensors and systems are: (1) traffic detection on motorways; (2) traffic detection and turning movement analysis; and (3) traffic detection inside and around tunnels. Traficon products have been evaluated since 1987 by the European DRIVE I and DRIVE II programmes, and in various trials, mostly in Europe.
