Abstract

This paper explores various technology-based options for monitoring recurring urban and suburban congestion. Incident management is addressed as a by-product benefit of the controlled strategy of recurring congestion. The main infrastructure of advanced traffic management is traffic sensors. The state-of-the-art technology of traffic sensors is evaluated with particular emphasis on video image processing (VIP). VIP is a fast developing technology whose continued review and evaluation is necessary for intelligent transportation system (ITS) programs and research. (A*)
