Abstract

Lime produced in small kilns is suitable for stabilising soils to provide a satisfactory material for road bases. This report reviews possible sources of lime in Ghana and gives details of a field trial with a simple updraught kiln in Ghana, with an estimate of costs. The relative economics of using natural materials, cement-stabilised materials and lime-stabilised materials are discussed, and the circumstances under which the establishment of village-scale lime production would be viable are considered. Further trials with small kilns are in hand. (Author/publisher)
