Since the use of studded tyres causes severe pavement wear, alternative strategies are discussed in Sweden. This report presents the effects on accident rate, pavement wea,. car costs and environment if studded tyres were replaced by winter tyres. As a basis the winter 1993-1994 is used and the predictions are for the winter 1999-2000. One assumption for the latter calculations is that future pavements will be more wear resistant. Another assumption is that studded tyres, if they are allowed, would be of the lightweight type. V.T.I. Meddelande 756 presents the estimations of the effects of a prohibition of studded tyres, compared to the "zero alternative" (studded tyres allowed) (see C 5724 S (IRRD 879184).
