Abstract

The suitability of backscattered light for the measurement of visibility is discussed on the basis of previous practical and theoretical investigations and of 2½ years' test in routine meteorological work. Tests have been demonstrated that backscatter devices indicate visibility equally as well as other types of visibility meters with an accuracy of + 20 %, provided that no completely abnormal distribution of aerosol particles occurs.
