Abstract

Driving is a visually dominated skill. Present eye sight requirements provide for a crude static test of visual acuity. The number plate test is inconsistent, unfair and uncertain. Other factors which can affect driving safety such as visual field, are not routinely assessed. British Standard (BS) "Snellen" letter charts do provide a consistent and repeatable test of acuity.
