Phase I of this study, comparing vision test scores and three-year driving records (accidents and convictions for traffic citations), was supported by a grant from the U.S. Public Health Service and the results of this phase were described in a June 1967 report. Phase II was supported by a contract with the State of California and the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads, and this report presents the major findings from this second phase of the overall research program. Phase III which is currently underway, is supported by a contract with the U.S.Public Health Service and involves an investigation of the relationship between specific types of accidents and specific types and degrees of visual impairment.
