Abstract

This is the third paper in a trio that presents new thinking regarding intelligent motor vehicle child protection. A novel design for Intelligent Child Restraints (ICR) transforms the existing electronic-less child restraint, promotes a shift in the identified child restraints paradigm, and assigns the CR new functions. Vision Zero for Children offers an engineering based policy where the CR is instrumental in providing children with a protection envelope through the complete cycle of vehicle operation. An ICR supports a holistic approach to hazard mitigation, sets new standards for child passenger safety in the 21st century and is a first introduction of the car seat industry to the ITS world.
