Abstract

This article describes an investigation of the influence of roads and traffic on the appraisal of the image of residential streets. The appraisal has been quantified and a connection between visual judgement and some objective, measurable environmental factors have been found. The average judgment for ten pictures of residential streets proved to be described partially by a predictor used in England by the Department of the Environment. It was impossible to find a connection between the judgement and some social characteristics. A rather large part of the variation in the judgements remains unexplained.
