Abstract

In Wallonia, an extensive road telematics project has been set up in order to upgrade the services to the drivers on the motorway network. This project includes the deployment of Variable Message Signs on the Walloon motorways. Although the use of VMS has been investigated in several international projects, these systems vary considerably in presentation. The analysis of the existing reports and guidelines has led to the definition of three types of VMS systems that will be implemented in the next years on the Walloon motorways. The difficulties encountered in this study to apply international recommendations demonstrate clearly the need for a more pragmatic approach in the search for consensus on the uniform use and presentation of VMS systems.
