Abstract

In The Netherlands and other European countries motorised traffic has grown substantially since the introduction of the automobile. Space for pedestrians has been curtailed on behalf the automobile. Public transport can reduce motor traffic. Offering space for pedestrians will be necessary to realise a safe network of footways. Bus stations and main railway connections should be designed in a way so that passengers can wait or change in a safe and pleasant environment. The quality of bus- and railway stations is important to persuade people to travel by public transport instead of by car. (A)
