Abstract

After a general introduction (1) on the human eye, photometry and sources of light, the report deals with the functional aspects of public lighting (2), its design (3), and the cost benefit analysis (4). In chapter 2 the function of traffic provisions in general and those of traffic lighting are dealt with. The demands are stated. In chapter 3 recommendations for public lighting are given, the influence of the pavement, the design and the installation geometry are treated. In chapter 4 the costs of all stages of lighting are discussed and the benefits of public lighting mentioned. Lighting furthers traffic safety. At the end a list for further reading is given.
