Abstract

Measurements of frost depth and investigations of physical properties causing freezing of soil have been carried out in a large number of projects at VTI. Measurements of frost depth have been carried out in studies of boulder heave, frost heave and insulation in road construction. Such measurements have also been carried out in normal construction of roads and streets, where an estimate of the bearing capacity during spring was made, as well as tests to reduce the risk of damage to the water supply systems. The main purpose for establishing the Frost Data Base (FDB) is to collect the results from measurements of frost depth together with various properties of the subgrade, road pavement, groundwater level and climate. The information enhances the knowledge of frost penetration in Sweden. The FDB can be used in research as well as in assistance to local and regional road administrations. The FDB contains 221 points where measurements and physical properties are collected. They represent 650 frost seasons. The information has been used to determine the periods when frost penetration and thaw start. Observed maximal frost depth in different subgrades is also registered. The measurements from the county of Kronoberg in southern Sweden are described in detail. The positions of the measurement points are listed at the end of the paper. (A)
