Abstract

Urban areas and in particular local roads represent significant risks to road users. Accident statistics in the past have enabled the identification of dangerous road design features, improved vehicle safety and aided in modifying driver behaviour. Certain groups of road users are over-represented in the accident statistics. These include young drivers and young passengers, cyclists, and both children, pedestrians and aged pedestrians.
