Abstract

Patterns of injury and hospital admission are reported for 1572 of the 1720 adult road accident victims reporting to Waikato Hospital. Motorcyclists accounted for about half of the injured drivers and on average they spent a longer time in hospital than did the car drivers. A small portion of the victims, namely those with extended stays in hospital, accounted for a disproportionate fraction of the total patient days spent in hospital.
