Abstract

The intention of this paper is to present the concept of the Walking School Bus Program, its implementation in Greater Dandenong, and to discuss the benefits of the program; particularly, in terms of improving safety for children. The Walking School Bus Program promotes primary school children walking to and from school under adult supervision as a safe and active form of transport. The program is a VicHealth initiative; and is being implemented in 33 Council areas across Victoria. The City of Greater Dandenong piloted the program in 4 primary schools in 2002, and has extended the program to 3 other schools with continued support from VicHealth. Due to the success and popularity of the program and its health and safety benefits to community, Council has made a commitment to sustaining the program.
