The first part of this booklet deals with the development of the traffic unsafety in The Netherlands from 1965 to 1980 The facts in this chapter are taken from the VOR, an institution that registrates accidents, using the forms that are filled in by the police. It bas been found that the mortality rate has dropped with 30%. The differences in mortality between age groups and sexes, due to traffic are dealt with, as is the way one participate traffic. The second part describes the history of "Veilig Verkeer Nederland", a private, though substantially subsidized, association founded in 1932 to improve traffic safety. The next four chapters deal with respectively traffic education, the links with the authorities, the scientific research and the organisation.
