Abstract

The effect of severe weather conditions on traffic under the main headings of the highway, the vehicle and the driver are commented. Some of the research on weather hazards which has been carried out in connection with high level major route locations and the development of highway design features to minimise soms of the difficulties to traffic are outlined. Research work on the effect of weather on vehicle design and driver behaviour is also discussed and conclusions drawn on trends and developments, particularly surveillance systems to cover hazards arising from severe weather conditions.
