A one-day conference was held on December 15, 1988, in Utrecht, the Netherlands, on various possibilities to combat traffic jams. The conference was centred around two themes: a) integral approach of traffic and transport systems, technical as well as managerial; b) integral approach of the design and maintenance of roads and pavements. Attention was paid to: a) the accessibility of the Randstad area in the Netherlands; b) the future of the Dutch Railways; c) the Hamburger Verkehrsverbund (HVV); d) integration of public transport in the northern part of the Dutch Province of Groningen; e) traffic and road engineering aspects of traffic jams; f) modern road construction techniques to combat traffic jams; g) international research programs of SHRP (Strategic Highway Research Program) and OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development) and their importance for the Netherlands.
