In the framework of the project "Infrastructure and spatial development" of the Projectbureau IVVS a number of different studies have been carried out to get a better understanding of the possible role of infrastructure as a controlling variable for spatial economic policy. Part of the program was dedicated to research of the structuring of the A 1 motorway, an east-west connection through the central region of the Netherlands. In the study the relationship has been investigated, on the basis of a four digit zip code, between indicators of economic activity and the proximity of transportinfrastructure. It is concluded mainly that, although statistically weak , there exists a relationship between infrastructure and spatial economic variables. The conclusion is also valid if a comparison is made between the A 1 area and a control area. The presence of industrial areas has a strong influence on economic activities, both in the A 1 area and the control area.
