Abstract

In July 1997 the Western Australian Young Driver Cohort Study was extended to include a cohort of probationary motor car drivers from rural Western Australia. Drivers were recruited to the study either at the time they obtained their drivers' licence at rural licensing centres or by mail at a later date. The final cohort consisted of 519 probationary drivers aged 17: 64.4 percent female, 35.6 percent male. This report presents details of the recruitment procedure, the research questionnaire, and the findings at baseline (that is, at the time drivers obtained their probationary licence).
