Abstract

All modes of transport have a role to play in managing mobility and developing a safe and efficient transport system. Transport policy has developed the concept of "seamless public transport" to make public transport more attractive and car competitive. Passenger interchange is a key element in the success of a public transport network but also potentially its weakest link. The feasibility and concept planning for public transport interchanges in Australia and the United Kingdom are reviewed to determine some of the factors contributing to the success of transport interchanges. The paper examines barriers to interchange and measures to overcome these barriers including physical and non-physical measures.
