Abstract

This presentation on the use of alcohol and drugs and traffic safety in the USA showed how alcohol related traffic fatalities declined from 60% in 1990 to an all-time low of 44% in 1993. With regard to drugs other than alcohol, a national study of the incidence of drugs (including alcohol) in fatally injured drivers revealed the following drug incidence rates in these drivers: alcohol (52%), marijuana (7%), cocaine (5%), tranquillizers (3%), amphetamines (2%). Most of the drugs were in combination with alcohol. New research in the USA being now conducted to decrease the use of alcohol and drugs in traffic are listed.
