Abstract

The safety status of the vehicles of the driving environment may be characterized to some extent by the condition or mechanical state of their braking systems. This study focuses upon the condition of brakes in the driving population of North Carolina and the extent to which brake failure or brake defects have apparently contributed to highway crashes, with the objective of determining the desirability and feasibility of upgrading the vehicle inspection program with more in-depth brake examination.
