Abstract

The Smart Park system developed for Melbourne Shopping Centre is described. The first fully-automated shopper discounted parking system, the discount given is based on the value of purchases made by the customer. A Smartcard is dispensed at the car park entrance and purchases recorded by a Pin Pad Card reader in each shop. Discounts are then calculated at the exit. Details are provided of the components of the system and the advantages to shopper and shopping centre. A central computer collects all data which is used to operate car park signs and provide statistics. The marketing information obtained is particularly useful to shopping centre managers. Other uses for the system include control of access.
