Abstract

Death caused by road traffic accidents in Japan have steadily decreased for eight years since 1971. In 1978 the figure was 8.783 deaths which was virtually one half of the 1970 peak of over 16000 deaths. This is probably the result of the thorough-going and comprehensive traffic safety countermeasures which were carried out by the national and local governments with the full cooperation of the Japanese people.
