Abstract

Deaths caused by road traffic accidents in Japan have steadily decreased since 1971 despite the increase in automobile ownership. The number of deaths in 1981 decreased slightly to 8.719, a drop of only 41 over the preceding year. The number of accidents registered was 485.578; 607.346 persons were injured in 1981, indicating a slight upturn for the past four censecutive years.
