Abstract

This white paper reviews trends in traffic accidents and the enforcement of traffic safety in Japan. Traffic accident statistics from the Japanese National Police Agency are given for various years up to 1990; they cover motor vehicles owned, trends in motor vehicle traffic, road improvements, population by age and traffic fatalities by age, user, time of day and week. Current traffic safety promotion programs concern the elderly, road improvement projects, safety education, driver education, vehicle safety and enforcement of traffic laws. Some comparative international traffic accident statistics are presented in the final chapter.
