Abstract

Ways in which winter damage to road pavements could be reduced mainly from the point of view of pavement design, construction and maintenance are considered. Details of the various factors involved, i. e. gritting materials, de-icing chemicals, snow clearing machines, studded tyres and snow chains are given. Future research is needed on traffic safety effects of studded tyres, less damaging studded tyres or alternative vehicle equipment for winter driving, and further improvement in the design and construction of pavements.
