This report is an analytical study of the frequency of winter traffic accidents in Illinois during 1963. For purposes of the study, winter traffic accidents are considered as those that occurred during the four months January through march and December. Nonwinter accidents are those that occurred during the remaining eight months of the year. Comparisons were made of the relative frequency of accidents that occurred during the winter at urban, as contrasted to those that occurred at rural locations under similar conditions and circumstances. Winter traffic accidents accounted for 39.4 per cent of all urban accidents as contrasted to 34.0 percent of all rural accidents. Persons killed in winter accidents accounted for 33.3 per cent of all urban traffic fatalities while at rural locations 28.9 per cent of all fatalities occurred in winter accidents. Miles of vehicular travel generated during winter made up 30.8 per cent of the estimated miles of travel in 1963.
