Abstract

This paper describes the work undertaken in a research project concerned with the development and demonstration of specifications for wireless communication links within urban traffic management and control (UTMC) systems in the UK. These specifications are applicable to both roadside-to-vehicle and fixed links within these systems. It describes the work undertaken in reviewing current wireless technologies and relevant projects, and the setting up and operation of a demonstration to examine the deployment of several technologies in the UTMC environment. The results of this project will be targeted at operators of urban road networks responsible for the implementation of measures that support policies such as encouraging greater use of sustainable transport modes and improved safety.
