Abstract

Some local authorities are already using very advanced tools to detect and ticket parking violations. MeterVisions's innovative ParkSmart Network (PSN) provides rapid, consistent, and accurate information to municipalities and their parking enforcement officers and maintenance personnel. It provides critical information, including where expired meters are located and whether or not a vehicle is in the space. PSN is a patented, proprietary wireless information management system, which interfaces with existing meters, and enables real-time data transfers between meters, managers, and other staff. Its durable Meter Enhancement Unit (MEU) attaches to existing meters to monitor and report their condition. Sensor technology is used to determine if meters are functioning properly, if and for how long a vehicle has been parked nearby, and whether there is an expired condition. PSN supplies meter information in real time, by sequential order, and by zone or area of responsibility. It can also directly transmit a licence number to a motor vehicle department, to verify its permit status. The author of this article is impressed with the execution and technology of Meter-Vision, whose membership of Lucent Technologies Open Systems Innovation Program expands its presence in the telecommunications market.
