Abstract

Ramp metering/control is an important component of Wisconsin's application of advanced technologies for traffic management and traveller information. Ramp metering has been implemented in the Milwaukee area for several decades and more recently has been expanded to the Madison area. Ramp control gates are used at strategic locations throughout Wisconsin, USA, primarily for closure of the freeway due to incidents or weather. Ramp metering and control have not been part of the Statewide Transportation Plan. Major ITS projects have been included, but many operational deployments such as ramp metering, highway advisory radio, cameras, etc. have either been deployed as specialty contracts or included within larger capital projects. This hinders WisDOT in its ability to provide a coordinated statewide approach to solving transportation problems. For the covering abstract see ITRD E134653.
